Morpheus8 and radiofrequency microneedling: what it does, what it costs and what to ask before you book

Dr Leah’s view

Morpheus8 is marketed for lifting, but Dr Leah sees its value elsewhere. Whether it is the right device for you depends on how much of your concern is skin quality and how much is sagging.

In The Ageless Blueprint, Dr Leah rates Morpheus8 out of 10, explains which patients Dr Leah chooses it for over other energy devices, and sets out the combination Dr Leah uses in clinic for early jowls. This page gives the facts any patient should have first.

What Morpheus8 is

Morpheus8 is a radiofrequency microneedling device. An array of fine needles enters the skin and delivers controlled radiofrequency heat at a depth the practitioner selects, prompting collagen and elastin remodelling in the tissue beneath. Other RF microneedling devices used in the UK include Secret RF and Potenza; the principles are similar, although settings and needle depths differ between machines.

The treatment sits between pure skin-quality treatments and pure tightening devices. Because the needles work on the skin surface as well as heating deeper tissue, it is used for fine lines, crepey skin, enlarged pores, acne scarring and some sun damage, alongside mild to moderate laxity, early jowling and early neck looseness. It can be used across the whole face, including the upper face and around the eyes, and on the body, including the upper arms, stomach and thighs.

Generally used for

  • Skin texture, fine lines, pores and scarring, with some tightening at the same time
  • Early jowling, a less defined jawline and early neck laxity
  • The under-eye area and body areas that tightening-only devices cannot reach

What to expect

Results Better skin quality and texture with subtle tightening, building over the course as collagen remodels. The lifting effect is generally modest.
How long it lasts A course of three treatments is usual. Maintenance depends on the skin and the area treated; the guide explains how Dr Leah plans it.
Appointment and downtime Numbing cream is applied beforehand and oral painkillers are often advised. Expect redness and swelling, then a rough, sandpaper-like texture for around five to seven days after the redness settles, and longer on the body.
What can go wrong Redness, swelling and pigmentation change. Unwanted fat loss, burns and, more rarely, scarring. Depth and energy settings are chosen by the practitioner, so the outcome depends heavily on who is holding the handpiece.
Cost Typical UK prices are £500 to £750 per full-face session, £800 to £1,500 for a course of three to the eye area, £1,400 to £3,300 for three full-face sessions including the eyes, and £1,500 to £3,600 for face, eyes and neck.

Five things to ask before you book

  1. Is my main concern skin quality or sagging, and is Morpheus8 the right device for that balance?
  2. What needle depth and energy settings will you use on my jawline, my cheeks and around my eyes, and why do they differ?
  3. How do you avoid unwanted fat loss in my cheeks and temples?
  4. What will my skin look like on day two and day six, and when can I wear make-up?
  5. If I have significant jowling, will you tell me when a course of Morpheus8 is unlikely to give me the result I want?

Dr Leah’s verdict is in the guide

Chapter 10 of The Ageless Blueprint rates Morpheus8 out of 10 and explains why Dr Leah describes versatility as its main benefit. It sets out which patients Dr Leah chooses it for instead of a tightening-only device, the single area where Dr Leah finds it gives particular value, why depth and settings matter more here than with most energy treatments, the combination Dr Leah uses in clinic for early jowls, and when Dr Leah would send a patient for a surgical opinion instead. Common questions

What is the difference between Morpheus8 and ordinary microneedling?

Ordinary microneedling makes fine channels in the skin to prompt repair. Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency heat delivered through the needle tips at a chosen depth, so it works on deeper tissue and can produce some tightening as well as a change in texture.

How many Morpheus8 sessions do you need?

Typically a course of three. A full-face session is usually £500 to £750 in UK clinics, and a course covering face, eyes and neck is typically £1,500 to £3,600.

Does Morpheus8 cause fat loss?

It can. The device can reach deep enough to affect fat, which is useful when a small pocket under the chin is the target and unwanted when it is not. Depth and settings are the practitioner’s decision, which is why Dr Leah treats experience as the first thing to check.
